Was it hard to film this?

Yes, in general I struggle to find financiers. In the end, it all has to do with money. Almost could not filming Cosmopolis. Producers are not stupid. That is, the types read the scripts, they realize that this film has too many philosophical dialogues, which takes place almost entirely inside a car, and wonder: Who the hell is going to be interested in seeing this? And that we had to Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti in the cast. Nothing ensures the commercial success of a film. That is the reason that I struggle to find financiers.

He also speaks of the crisis, protests, issues that may scare away some viewers …
It’s funny, but when Don DeLillo Cosmopolis wrote 10 years ago there were not many signs that pull up a financial crack. In a sense we anticipate the economic crisis. I do not say that DeLillo and I are prophets, but art tends to anticipate events. We wrap the scene in which you throw a pie in the face yuppie who plays Robert Pattinson and saw on television an image where the communications mogul Robert Murdoch will launch a fake cake to the face. It’s creepy. Sometimes when you work on a movie or write a novel, you stumble upon the future in your face.

Were you looking for more audience to have Robert Pattinson, star of Twilight in the casting?
Not exactly. But a funny thing happened. While we were shooting, some girls fans and Twilight Robert Pattinson on Cosmopolis set up a site and read the novel. They were, according to them, delighted with the book. There is something remarkable in all this: someone interested in reading DeLillo or see this movie just because it’s Pattinson. This is what happened to those who saw A History of Violence or Eastern Promises Viggo Mortensen drawn in because it was Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings.
